Chill Time. Linkin Park songs.

 Linkin Park

Origins of Linkin Park

Linkin Park was founded by three high school friends: Mike Shinoda, Rob Bourdon and Brad Delson. Originally band was named "SuperXero" which was fastly renamed to "Xero". In March 1999 Xero recruited Azirona vocalist Chester Bennington, the band then agreed on change and was renamed to "Hybrid Theory". After failing to catch Warner Bros. Records on three previous reviews, Blue, who was the vice president of Warner Bros. Records, helped the band sign a deal with the company as a developing artist in 1999. The label advised the band to change their name to avoid confusion with Hybrid. After that group was renamed to Linkin Park which sounded familiar with Lincoln Park.

Music Discussion

We will analyze two songs from this group. They are Numb and One More Light.

Numb

The song talks us about depression of people in relations with family, in love. It explains us how people affect each other, example is relationship beetwen child and parents. In some families parents want their children to do something they can't do or they don't want to, something that's unreachable for child.

I am tired of being what you want me to be
Feeling so faithless, lost under the surface
I don't know what you are expecting of me
Put under the pressure of walking in your shoes

These lyrics tells us about the child who has been forced to follow the dreams of their parents once but were never able to achieve. Instead of enjoying life, they feel worthless because they were never able to do what their parents want. Quote "lost under the surface" shows us the struggle of needing breathe but not be able to reach the air.

Caught in the undertow, just caugth in the undertow
Every step I take is another mistake to you

"Caught in the undertow" states that every step turns out to be a mistake, concept being similar to "caught in the undertow". Caught in the undertow is well known concept for swimmers, it's swimming against waves, being unable to find balance as they are tangled beetwen vicious water waves. That explains, no matter how many steps they take, they still will be in one place, stuck, trying to espace, but not being able to.

I've become so numb, I can't feel you there
Become so tired, so much more aware
I'm becoming this, all I want to do
Is be more like me, and be less like you

Chorus is about being tired of this kind of life, and being numb toward the path they forced to follow and toward to them who is forcing you to be the way they want, and all you want is to become free, be yourself, chase your dreams.

Can't you see that you are smothering me
Holding too tightly, afraid to lose control
'Cause everything that you thought I would be
Has fallen apart, right in front of you

2nd verse tells us about being sufficated from overbearing attention and strict upbringing. However you're tring to change that and trying change yourself, yet they fear you are losing control. But in fact, they who have been losing control the whole time. And you are nothing like they want you to be.

And I know I may end up failing too
But I know you were just like me
        With someone dissappointed in you

Here, Chester is firstly telling his parents that he could not realise his dreams and end up becoming controlling parent. However he also reprimands them, saying they too were young and had a dream that was totally different to the life that their parents had envisioned for them.

One More Light

Mike Shinoda said, in an interview with Zach Sang, that the song was about a friend who lost a battle to cancer.

Shoud I've stayed, were these signs, I ignored?
Can I help you, not to hurt, anymore?
We saw brilliance, when the world, was asleep
There are the things that we can have, but can't keep

There seemed to be no signs because everything was so rapid and unexpected. Mike was devastated and wanted to remember the friends he had lost over the years. It's very difficult to watch someone you care about suffer, it has a tendency to make one feel powerless. While he wishes he could have cured her and put an end to her suffering.

Chester wants to show how someone's actions, regardless how minimal they are, might make someone's day. He communicates the very real importance one person one can have others, leaving a lasting impression even after they are gone. Chester references how we can have things but they don't last forever, sadly this includes our closest friends and family.

        If they say,
Who cares if one more light goes out?
In the sky of a million stars
        It flickers, flickers
Who cares if someone's time runs out?
If a moment is all we are
        Or quicker, quicker
Who cares if one more light goes out?
        Well, I do

There are over 7.7 billion people on this planet, so objectively we can say that one death isn't at all significant. But we all know that a death of a friend or even just someone we have known or looked up is a great loss.

The reminders, pull the floor from your feet
In the kitchen, one more chair than you need
And you're angry, and you should be, It's not fair
Just 'cause you can't see it, doesn't mean it, isn't there

Similar to how soldiers set up a "Missing Man Table" in memory of one who is no longer with them, the seat that was used by this friend of Linkin Park will no longer be filled. Losing a friend or loved one too soon does lead to anger. It's natural to be angry and anger is a part of grieving. Just because a person is dead, doesn't mean that is no longer among us.
