Dota was under development of many modders and there were many versions, most popular ones were developed by modders Eul and Guinsoo. In 2005 Guinsoo left his DotA version "DotA: Allstars", and modder IceFrog took responsibility to develop the game. IceFrog initiated large changes that deepened its complexity and capacity for innovative gameplay. Under his development peek number of users in forum was over one million.

In 2008 developer began to work on their own "DotA style" video games. There were 2 popular ones called "Minions" and "Demigod". In 2009 Riot Games released "League of Legends. It was initially designed by one of the original creators of "DotA: Allstars", Steve Feak. Also, in 2009 IceFrog who had continued to develop "DotA: Allstars" was hired by Valve, in order to design sequel to the original map.

I recommend you to play DOTA 2 if you are searching for complexed mechanics and good graphics. If you just want to relax, play League Of Legends.
